Symposium examines geneticsThe Medical Center is sponsoring a symposium to address the issues of genetic privacy and discrimination. The event on June 14-15 will include presentations by experts in a variety of disciplines, including medicine, genetics, ethics, law, and public policy. The goal of the symposium is to develop specific recommendations for research and, in turn, the generation of data and sound public policies to minimize and prevent genetic discrimination. Lecture series honors chemistJackie Ying of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will deliver the first seminar in the Su Distinguished Lectureship Series on Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. in 202 Gavett Hall. Sponsored by the Department of Chemical Engineering, the series honors the contributions of the late Professor Gouq-Jen (Gene) Su, who taught chemical engineering from 1947 until his retirement in 1974. Women's Club hosts authorZena Collier, a noted author and Rochester resident, will speak at the University Women's Club annual meeting on Friday, May 10. Collier's talk is entitled "Reflections of a Late Bloomer." The annual meeting will be held at The Century Club, 566 East Ave., at 10:45 a.m. A luncheon will follow. Student employee graduating?Student Employment at the Career Center would like to remind supervisors who oversee student employees that seniors cannot receive payroll payment through student employment after graduation. Two additional hiring options are available for students:
Fair features office productsAll users of office supplies are invited to attend the Staples Office Productivity Fair on April 23 in Helen Wood Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet with Staples and more than 20 University suppliers to sample the products offered. The fair include hands-on demonstrations, free samples, door prizes, refreshments, and a StaplesLink training seminar.
Research participants neededRSV and influenza virus--Healthy men and women between the age of 18-45 are needed for a virus screening research study. Participants will be required to stay at a local hotel 24 hours per day for nine days between May 9-22. Lodging and meals provided. Payment up to $1,200. Healthy Postmenopausal Women--Women between the age of 35-60 who do not have naturally occurring menses or who have had both ovaries removed for more than 12 months are needed for an for an 18-week study to evaluate the effects of two medications and placebo in the treatment of hot flashes. Participants must experience 7 to 20 hot flashes per day and have no medical complications related to hormone replacement therapy. Current hormone replacement therapy users are potentially eligible. Depression--Mothers with children between the ages of 7 and 8 are needed for a study investigating children's learning and parent-child relationships. Mothers must have experienced depression or manic-depression since the birth of their child and must not receive public assistance.
