Eastman kicks off summer concert series

The Ying Quartet
The Ying Quartet will perform Janacek's Quartet No. 2 (Intimate Letters) and Carter Pann's Love Letters (a work written for the Yings) on June 27.

Gibbs Street will echo with music this summer, as the Eastman School presents more than 40 concerts and other performances as part of its six-week Summer Session, June 24-August 2. Featured performers include Community Education Division (CED) and Eastman faculty, special guest artists, and summer program participants.

Kicking off the series on June 24 is a doubleheader of jazz and harp music. Eastman faculty member Dave Rivello brings his acclaimed 12-piece jazz ensemble back for its ninth year. In Howard Hanson Hall at the same time, visiting recitalist and clinician Eira Lynn Jones, a member of the harp faculty at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Cheetham's School in Manchester, England, presents a special "Practical Harpist" concert with Kathleen Bride, Eastman professor of harp.

Other performance highlights include Eastman's quartet-in-residence, Ying Quartet, on June 27; renowned dulcimer player Mitzie Collins presents her annual summer extravaganza in Kilbourn Hall on July 1; back from a concert tour in Russia in 2001, CED flutist Sophia Gibbs Kim offers a program of music from Russia and the former Soviet republics on July 6; and one of the world's leading brass ensembles, Canadian Brass, opens a special two-day summer residency at Eastman with a July 26 performance in Eastman Theatre.

A complete concert schedule is available online at www.rochester.edu/Eastman. Most concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.; all are open to the public, and all but four (June 27, July 10, 26, 27) are free. Tickets for these concerts (except July 27) are available at Ticket Express, 100 East Ave. or by calling 222-5000. Tickets also may be purchased at the hall box office one hour before each concert. For up-to-date program information, call the Eastman's 24-hour MusicLine at x4-1100.
