United Way pledges top $845,000

More than 5,000 University faculty, staff, and retirees pledged $846,545, a 10 percent increase over last year, to support United Way programs in the 2002 campaign.

"I'd like to offer thanks to all who contributed and to the almost 600 volunteers who made this year's United Way campaign the most successful in the history of the University," says Robert Allen, campaign coordinator.

This year 1,345 first-time donors contributed, and 20 percent more people than last year became leadership donors, pledging in excess of $1,000.

"The success of the campaign depends heavily upon the dedicated effort of volunteers and the generosity of the thousands who contribute," adds Allen. "As the second-largest employer in Rochester, the University's participation is key to the success of the United Way campaign. Our support is an example of how 'we take care of our own' as an integral part of the Rochester community."

The 2002 United Way of Greater Rochester campaign raised in excess of $35.5 million to support the programs of almost 200 community service agencies which serve more than 800,000 people each year.
