July concerts offer carillon on the quad

The final two concerts of the Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series will feature Gloria Werblow at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, and Julia Walton at 7 p.m. Monday, July 22, on the Eastman Quadrangle of the River Campus.

Werblow, who has been the carillonneur at Calvary Episcopal Church in Williamsville, N.Y., since 1977, has played recitals throughout the United States and Canada. During her July 15 show, Werblow will perform a variety of works including In the Good Old Summertime by George Evans, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Dutch, Austrian, and English folksongs.

Studying carillon at the University of Michigan and the Netherlands Carillon School, Walton has played recitals in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Her program will feature selections from four categories of carillon music: music arranged from hymn tunes and folk songs such as Ode to Joy and The Lass with the Delicate Air; music for other instruments arranged for the carillon, including works by Mozart and Saint Saens; popular music such as Gershwin's Summertime; and compositions for the carillon.

This year, for the first time, there will be a video feed from the carillon to the quad during the concerts so that listeners will be able to see the carillonneur play.

Both concerts are free and will proceed rain or shine. Concertgoers are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets to enjoy the show from the quadrangle in front of the library.
