Wanted: musicians

The University Symphony Orchestra is holding auditions for its upcoming season on Thursday, August 29; Friday, August 30; and Tuesday, September. 3. Membership is open to experienced and qualified musicians from the greater Rochester area as well as to University students, faculty, and staff. The orchestra presents four free concerts each year under the baton of David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities at the College.

Auditions may be scheduled by calling x5-2828 during the third week of August. Each player should prepare a selection of two to three minutes that shows both technical proficiency and general musicality. There will also be sight reading from the standard orchestral repertoire.

Health care, Spanish combine

Spanish for Health Care Professionals, an accelerated learning course that teaches simple phrases, terminology, and pronunciation necessary to communicate on a basic level with Spanish-speaking clients, is being offered again this fall. The class is geared toward individuals who work with Spanish-speaking clients in a health-related area. Students examine cultural differences that impact health and health care decisions. The class includes four Thursday sessions starting on October 11 and ending November 7. All sessions are from 8 a.m. to noon in the Helen Wood Hall at the School of Nursing. Class size is limited and registration is required. For more information, call Andrea Chamberlain at x5-8832

Bring lunch and listen

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the MCAG Brown Bag Lunch on Thursday, September 12, from noon to 1 p.m. Laurie Joslin, president of Unlimited Coaching Solutions, presents "Fine Tune Your Listening Skills" in Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building, Room 1-9545. Brown bag lunches are welcome.

Sign up to run/walk

Individuals and teams can register for the 3-mile Bill Sweet Memorial Walk/Run, scheduled for Saturday, September 14, at Genesee Valley Park. Pledges collected by participants benefit the Organ Transplant Program at Strong Memorial Hospital. Bill Sweet, a longtime Friends of Strong volunteer at Strong Memorial Hospital, was the first person in the world to have bypass surgery of a second transplanted heart, a procedure performed by George Hicks, professor of surgery.

Registration for the event is from 8:30-9:30 a.m. The event begins at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in numerous categories. Participants may register by calling Joanie Clancy at x5-2420.
