University launches 'URWireless'
The first phase focuses on the Eastman Quadrangle, Rush Rhees Library, and Wilson Commons. Students, faculty, and staff can use their own laptops and PDAs to access the Internet. Beyond providing flexibility and convenience to students, the service allows faculty and staff to check e-mail or update online calendars between meetings, during lunch, or on the run. "This is an early example of the kinds of changes I expect we'll see on campus tied to the IT strategic plan adopted a little over a year ago," says Provost Charles E. Phelps. "In this particular case, wireless capability on campus responds to the rapidly evolving expectations of our University community." The wireless pilot project is tied to the strategic plan's objective to provide a robust network throughout the University and is among several strategic initiatives under way this academic year. "As professors use the Internet more and more in their teaching, the need for convenience with technology grows as well," says Daryl DuLong '03. "Wireless access is the next big step for the University, allowing students to download course assignments and engage in thoughtful e-mail discussions without being tethered to a dorm room or computer lab." The next phase of the project, scheduled to get under way in July 2004, will expand wireless service to classrooms and lecture halls. "The goal is to create environments where the physical elements are no longer obstacles," says Jeanette Metzger, ITS project manager of the wireless computing effort. "It's a whole new way of thinking about technology." Prior to accessing wireless service on campus, users must first register for a Net ID and password. Once registered, faculty, staff, and students with wireless 802.11b WiFi compliant laptops or PDAs can access service in the designated areas and can move from one location to another without losing connection. For instructions on obtaining a Net ID and password and to learn more about using wireless service on campus, visit www.rochester.edu/its. The ITS Center on the Library Road side of Rush Rhees Library manages Net ID administration and support for the University.
