Plutzik offers back-to-back readings

Rushdie
Rushdie

A writer who gained worldwide attention when his novel The Satanic Verses (1988) provoked a death sentence against him by the Ayatollah Khomeini, Salman Rushdie will speak on Saturday, October 12, in the Alexander Palestra, located in the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center. His appearance, part of the Plutzik Memorial Series' 40th season, coincides with Meliora Weekend. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of the large number of visitors to campus that weekend and the large turnout expected for Rushdie's reading, call x5-4092 for parking instructions and other information.

Eshelman
Eshleman

Clayton Eshleman, who will talk at noon on Wednesday, October 16, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library, has published 12 books of poetry, and he founded and was the editor of two highly regarded literary magazines, Caterpillar and Sulfur. Recipient of the National Book Award in 1979 for his cotranslation of Vallejo's Complete Posthumous Poetry, Eshleman also has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Administered by the Department of English, the Plutzik Memorial Series, which is free and open to the public, is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious literary series. For more information, visit www.rochester.edu/college/eng/plutzik/series.html.
