Fire extinguishers save lives

Used properly, a portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by extinguishing a small fire or containing a fire until the fire department arrives. Remember, fire spreads quickly. If the fire cannot be extinguished in 30 seconds, it's time to get out.

Before deciding to fight a fire follow the acronym RACE:

  • Rescue anyone in immediate danger.

  • Activate the building fire alarm and call Security at x13.

  • Confine the fire by closing all doors.

  • Evacuate/Extinguish. Evacuate if the fire is spreading. Extinguish the fire if the fire alarm is activated and a clear exit is available.

To use an extinguisher: Stand six to eight feet away from the fire and remember the acronym PASS:

  • Pull the pin to activate the handle.

  • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.

  • Squeeze the handle.

  • Sweep the agent from side to side, discharge the entire contents of the extinguisher, and evacuate to safety.

For additional information or to schedule extinguisher training, call the Fire Marshall's Office at x5-3243.
