Mina Chung has been appointed an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. Chung was an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southern California. She also served on the retina service of Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and as resident supervisor as well as associate chief of service at Los Angeles County Medical Center.

Roman Giger, assistant professor of neurology and a scientist in the Center for Aging and Developmental Biology, has been awarded a three-year grant of $120,000 by the Alexandrine and Alexander L. Sinsheimer Foundation to continue his studies of the nervous system.

Andrew Goodman, associate professor of neuroimmunology and director of the Rochester Multiple Sclerosis Center at the University, has received the 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upstate New York Chapter, for his empowerment of people with multiple sclerosis through his push for Long Term Care and MS advocacy.

Kelly Kita, program coordinator for the study of tamoxifen and raloxifene at the Wilmot Cancer Center, was presented the Stellar Clinical Center Performance Award by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Program.

Christopher Lentz, a trauma surgeon specializing in major burns, has joined the staff at Strong Memorial Hospital as visiting associate professor and medical director of the Strong Regional Burn Center. Lentz's specialization in traumatic burns makes him the only major burn surgeon in the Rochester/Finger Lakes region and one of few such physicians in upstate New York.

Lynne Maquat, professor of biochemistry and biophysics, has been appointed chair of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review CDF-1 (molecular biology) study section and was recently elected secretary/treasurer of the RNA Society.

The Rochester Business Journal has named Dawn McWilliams, director of marketing at the William E Simon School of Business Administration, one of its "40 Under 40" award winners for 2002. As director of marketing, McWilliams is responsible for developing and implementing the Simon School's strategic marketing plans. McWilliams, who has been a member of the Simon School community for 14 years, will accept the award at a luncheon in November.

Gordon Phillips, visiting professor of hemotology/oncology, was recently named director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant and Leukemia Program at the Wilmot Cancer Center. Phillips is an expert in stem cell transplantation, leukemia therapy, and transplant biology, and he will oversee this combined program, which provides more than 120 transplants each year.

Peter Rowley, chief of the Division of Genetics, has been named coeditor-in-chief of the medical journal Genetic Testing. Rowley, professor of medicine, pediatrics, genetics, microbiology, immunology, and oncology, is a recognized expert in the area of hereditary susceptibility to cancer.

Fred Sherman will receive an honorary doctorate from the department of microbiology at the University of Minnesota on November 11.

Ira Shoulson, professor of neurology, medicine, and pharmacology, will lead one of the largest studies ever of patients with Parkinson's disease. The study will include 800 people with early-stage Parkinson's disease at 65 sites in the United States and Canada.

James Woods has been appointed Henry A. Thiede Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Woods, associate chair of the department since 1990, served as interim chair since the promotion of the department's former leader David Guzick to dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
