NOT THE AVERAGE PC--Michael Scott, professor of computer science, stands next to the department's newest supercomputer. The cutting-edge machine is a 32-processor IBM eServer that will aid researchers in work that includes developing power-efficient chips and designing smart microprocessors that may reveal how stars are born. The machine is one of five new supercomputers acquired with the help of a $1.2 million gift from IBM's Shared University Research program, an equipment award program designed to promote research in areas of interest to both IBM and universities. The other four supercomputers, each with 16 processors, are installed in the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. Researchers there will use the machines to learn more information about the way fusion works and how best to achieve it. |
Submissions for the upcoming November 18 issue are due by noon, Monday, November 11.
