FYIThe American Academy of Periodontology Foundation (AAPF) elected Jack Caton, professor of dentistry, to its board of directors at the foundation's annual meeting in New Orleans on September 23. Caton currently chairs the Gerald M. Bowers Endowment Fund for the American Board of Periodontology, a five-year, $1.5 million campaign launched in 2001 by the AAPF. Paul Coleman, professor of neurobiology and anatomy in the Center for Aging and Developmental Biology, was awarded the Mensch Award for Alzheimer's Disease Research earlier this month at the 32nd annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida. The Mensch award is presented by the Alzheimer's Research Forum, an international community of scientists in the field of Alzheimer's research, and is awarded to scientists who are making major contributions to Alzheimer's research. Only two such awards have ever been given. Two new deans have been named at the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Howard Federoff has been named senior associate dean for basic research, and Thomas Pearson has been named senior associate dean for clinical research. Ellen Koskoff, professor of ethnomusicology at the Eastman School of Music, has been chosen as one of this year's ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award winners. These prestigious awards, presented annually by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), recognize excellence in music writing (books, articles, and liner notes) by American authors and journalists. ASCAP will honor Koskoff and the other winners at a special ceremony in New York's Lincoln Center on December 4.
