MAG hosts arts, crafts festivalThe Memorial Art Gallery is hosting the 46th Clothesline Festival, Rochester's oldest and largest arts and crafts festival, Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Minority Affairs hosts eventsThe Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) is hosting a welcome reception for first year and transfer students on Friday, September 20, from 3 to 4 p.m. in Morey 310. In addition, OMSA will offer a series of five workshops this fall that focus on personal, academic, and community responsibility issues. Musicians invited to auditionThe Department of Music at the College sponsors two orchestral ensembles, the University Symphony Orchestra and the University Chamber Orchestra, which will hold open auditions on Thursday, August 29; Friday, August 30; and Tuesday, September 3. To schedule an audition, call (585) 275-7800 (x5-7800) during the third week of August. Each player should prepare a selection of two to three minutes that shows both technical proficiency and general musicality. There will also be sight reading from the standard orchestral repertoire.
Get involvedStudents have a unique opportunity to get involved in community health improvement initiatives at the Center for Rochester's Health, a community-academic partnership between the Monroe County Department of Health and the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Nursing. News from EastmanEastman hosts many performances throughout the year, most free to University students with ID. Eastman's weekly publication, In-House, is available at www.rochester.edu/Eastman/ConcertsEvents.htm, and is available at several locations on the River Campus, including the Information Center at Wilson Commons as well as in the Main Hall of the Eastman School. In House lists events at the School, including Eastman ensemble concerts, master classes, and faculty and student recitals as well as performances by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Take a trip to StratfordEach fall, the English department organizes a trip to the Shakespeare Festival at Stratford, Ontario, to see five plays. This year's trip is scheduled for Friday, September 20, to Sunday, September 22. Contact the English department at (585) 275-4092 (x5-4092) for details.
Study smarterLearning Assistance Services (LAS) offers free study support to all students in the College, including study groups and workshops for a range of courses. Students can also set up free appointments with an LAS study skills counselor to learn tips for managing time, managing stress, and taking tests. Family Center expands programThe After School Program is expanding this fall and will need qualified undergraduates to work for either pay or course credits. Operated by the Mt. Hope Family Center, which is part of the Department of Clinical and Social Psychology, the program provides intervention services for at-risk children ages 7 to 9. Students with an interest in psychological intervention and who enjoy working with children can apply by e-mailing Peggy Gold at campasp@yahoo.com.
Explore EuropeThe College offers unique opportunities for students who are interested in learning more about European culture. The Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies provides courses in Polish language, history, and culture, and sponsors a Polish club, films, concerts, and more. the Skalny Center also offers students the opportunity to study at Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Students interested in Russian culture can take courses through the Russian Studies Program or study in Russia on the four-week summer program at St. Petersburg University. Dance and so much moreThe Dance Program will host several events this fall in the Spurrier Dance Studio. On September 20, Mark Jarecke, a choreographer from New York City, will offer a master class from 3 to 5 p.m. and will discuss his creative process in collaboration with a visual artist from 7:30 to 9 p.m. On November 8, Morocco, a Middle Eastern dance performer and lecturer will host a master class from 3 to 5 p.m. and offer a demonstration from 7:30 to 9 p.m. All student from any discipline are invited to show creative work on November 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information on these events, call (585) 273-5150 (x3-5150).
