In BriefGallery throws employee bashThe Memorial Art Gallery is celebrating University employees with its "UR MAGnificent!" employee appreciation day on Thursday, January 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Employees are invited to enjoy free admission to the gallery as well as entertainment, munchies, cash bar, guided tours, and prizes. Employees also will receive 10 percent off purchases at the Gallery Store and 50 percent off a "supporter" level membership. In addition, employees are invited to hear acclaimed artist Janet Fish speak about her artwork at 7:30 p.m. free of charge. Feeling creative?The School of Nursing and the Division of Medical Humanities are offering a $200 prize to the University student (graduate or undergraduate), staff, and faculty member who submits the best creative work in any medium--poetry, fiction, fine arts, photography, or personal essay--dealing with issues of human values in health care. Get 'back' into shapeThe Strong Fitness and Wellness Center, through the Medical Center Athletic Club, is offering a six-week "Healthy Back Class" on Wednesdays, January 29 through March 5, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Taught by Anita Spoor, certified personal trainer and director of the center, the class is designed to give participants a plan for maintaining good back health throughout life. Insurance questions?Any University staff or faculty member with questions about property insurance claims or damage, events insurance, requirements for contractors and consultants working on campus, or general liability or risk management issues should call the University's Office of Risk Management at x5-8019. The office, part of the Office of Counsel to the University, the Medical Center, and Strong Health, is headed by Spencer Studwell, senior associate general counsel and director of risk management. Within his office, the University's insurance program is overseen by Maryann DeSantis, senior insurance administrator. Patient safety course offeredFaculty of the Division of Clinical Practice Evaluation in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine are offering a new program on patient safety. Sessions begin on February 6, and end on June 26, and are offered two Thursdays of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The registration deadline is January 31. An open informational session will be held on January 30, in the Case Method Room (1-9576). Role model wantedThe YMCA's Minority Achievers Program, a youth outreach service supported by the University, seeks an adult mentor to lead the Health Club, a career awareness program for high school students. The club leader works with University students to inform area high school students about health-related career choices. The club meets once a month, September through May. Club's inThe Family Care Program is sponsoring a vacation club for children ages 5-12 years during the winter and spring school breaks. Operated by Camp Fire Boys and Girls, the program is open to University and Strong Health employees and will be held February 17-21 and April 14-18, from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., on the River Campus. There is a $100 weekly program fee and $25 weekly registration fee. Call Family Care at x3-4644 for additional information and registration forms. Kids on winter break?The Medical Center Athletic Club will be holding a recess camp for children ages 7-12 years February 17-21, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp is open to all University employees and offers a variety of activities such as crafts, ice skating, and group games.
