Laser Lab hosts summer program

Gsiving motivated high school students the opportunity to conduct research in a realistic environment is the goal of the 2003 High School Summer Research Program, hosted by the University's Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

This summer, 12 area high school students, who have completed their junior year, will spend eight weeks working on science and technology projects related to the lab's 60-beam Omega laser, the world's most powerful fusion laser, and will be supervised by members of the research staff.

In addition to their projects, students will attend seminars in the areas of science and technology and receive payment for their work.

Directed by Stephen Craxton, senior scientist at LLE, the program is scheduled to begin on July 7 and culminate in a symposium on August 27, where students will present the results of their projects.

In the past, several summer research projects have led to recognition in national science competitions, including the Intel Science Talent Search and the Siemens Westinghouse competition. Three students from the 2002 program were among 300 nationwide who reached the semifinals of the Intel competition, and one student was among 40 to reach the finals.

Applications are due by March 21 and should be sent to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, 250 East River Road, Rochester, NY 14623-1299. Applications must include a short essay describing the student's interest in science and technology and a supporting letter from a teacher. Acceptance decisions will be made by the end of April.

For more information and application forms, contact Craxton at x5-5467.
