Sergio Ballester was recently named associate medical physicist in radiation oncology at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. He works closely with radiation oncologists to design treatment plans for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.

Theodore Brown, professor of community and preventive medicine and professor and chair of the Department of History, has been selected to serve on a task force for an international study of public health in the Third World. Researchers for the project, directed by the Rockefeller Foundation and titled "Human Resources for Health and Development," will examine how the West has implemented public health initiatives in Africa and Asia and how those initiatives have worked.

Eby Friedman, Distinguished Professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Martin Margala, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, are recipients of two of the five research project awards given by the Semiconductor Research Corporation and the University's Microelectronics Design Center for $1.5 million in funding. Each research effort is scheduled to receive $100,000 a year for three years.

Grzegorz Kolodko, the John C. Evans Visiting Professor in Polish and European Studies, who served as Poland's first deputy premier and minister of finance, has assumed the position for a second time. His role in shaping Poland's transition from socialism to the free market has given students an insider's view of the dramatic changes in central and eastern Europe in the last dozen years.

Todd Krauss, assistant professor of chemistry, has been named a recipient of a $200,000 James D. Watson Investigator Award, which honors New York biotechnology researchers who show great promise early in their careers.

Colin Poulter, professor emeritus of radiation oncology, was certified as medical review officer by the Medical Review Officer Certification Council. This designation qualifies Poulter to evaluate drug and alcohol testing for employers.
