FYIShaila Basavappa, assistant professor of medicine, pharmacology, and physiology, was recently awarded the American Gastroenterological Research Scholar Award for his work in chronic intestinal inflammation disorders. The $195,000 award over three years is given to support young investigators who demonstrate the potential to develop productive research careers in gastroenterology and/or hepatology. Materializing the Nation, a new book of essays by Robert Foster, associate professor and chair of anthropology, is grounded in years of ethnographic and historical research in Papua New Guinea. In the book, Foster addresses general questions of what it means to be a nation in the current era of globalization, relevance of national identities, and how products and mass media define and promote a community. Alan Lupack, director of the University's Rossell Hope Robbins Library and an internationally known Arthurian scholar, is featured in a new educational video about the legends of King Arthur. The tape, part of a series called Tracing the Arthurian Tradition, was produced by Films for the Humanities and Sciences and is available to schools, colleges, and public libraries. Rochester internist Louis Papa Jr., clinical assistant professor of medicine, is the first Monroe County physician to receive the American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award. The annual award honors physicians under age 40 for exemplary leadership qualities. Tourmaline, the latest novel by Joanna Scott, the Roswell S. Burrows Professor of English, is a finalist in the fiction category for the 23rd annual Los Angeles Times Book Prizes, which honor outstanding literary achievement in nine categories. In Tourmaline, an American moves to the Italian island of Elba to escape his financial failures, setting up events that cast the island's residents and his own family into turmoil.
