In BriefSummer 'Kids Klub' returnsThe University's Family Care Program is sponsoring the annual Camp Fire Kids Klub, a traveling day camp for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The camp includes eight weekly sessions beginning Monday, July 7, and ending Friday, August 29, and features activities such as games, arts and crafts, swimming, and field trips. Kids Klub will be held in Spurrier Gym on the River Campus from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is available to children of University and Strong Health employees. For young people between the ages of 13 and 16, a counselor-in-training program will be offered. Registration forms are available by calling x3-4644.
Women's club hosts art historianJanet Catherine Berlo, professor of art and art history, will speak at the University Women's Club Annual Meeting on Friday, May 9. The meeting will be held at the Century Club, 566 East Ave., at 10:45 a.m. followed by a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. The cost for the talk and luncheon is $18. Registration deadline is May 5. Berlo's research interests focus on the indigenous arts of the Americas. She has conducted fieldwork in Mexico, Guatemala, the Great Plains, and the Arctic and is the author of four books. Book donations wantedMysteries, thrillers, romance, classics, children's, science fiction, history, contemporary fiction, cookbooks, art and photography, travel, gardening, biography and autobiography--Friends of the University Libraries are looking for donations of preowned books for the 31st annual book sale scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 23 to 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rush Rhees Library. Athletic club hosts summer campThe Medical Center Athletic Club is offering a summer day camp for children between the ages of 7 and 12. The camp, which gives children an opportunity learn new skills in group activities such as crafts, swimming, and field trips, begins June 23 and continues through August 22 from 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Open to children of University employees and affiliates, the camp is New York certified and is supervised by three experienced counselors. The cost is $31 a day or $135 a week plus registration fees, with discounts available for multiple children. Call Heather at x5-2706 for more information or to request a registration packet.
Miner Library hosts fund-raiserThe Edward G. Miner Library at the Medical Center is hosting a bake sale on Monday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds benefit BiblioBuild, the first Habitat for Humanity house in the country sponsored by library employees and friends. The house was built and dedicated in Rochester. Bake sale proceeds will go to meet the $57,000 fund-raising goal. Eastman sponsors organ concertsThe Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative is hosting two upcoming community organ concerts in Rochester. The first will be held on Friday, May 9, at the First Universalist Church of Rochester, 150 Clinton Avenue South, at noon; the second is scheduled for Sunday, May 18, at Salem United Church of Christ, 60 Bittner Street, at 3 p.m. Both recitals are free and open to the public. Picnic celebrates survivorsBrain tumor survivors and their families, friends and medical staff will celebrate Brain Tumor Awareness Week with a picnic from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 8, at Brighton Town Park. The event will include a picnic dinner, chair massages, music, juggling, and other entertainment for children and is sponsored by the Medical Center's neurosurgery, pediatric oncology, and radiation oncology departments.
