May 8 talk addresses breast cancerThe Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center will present "When Cancer Recurs: Living and Thriving with Metastatic Breast Cancer" at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 8. The dinner program, held in the William and Mildred Levine Pavilion at the Medical Center, located at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Kendrick Road, will feature Jennifer Griggs, associate professor of hematology/oncology and medical director of the breast cancer program. The talk will address the decision-making process for women and their doctors in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, strategies for living a full life with disease, and offer resources for women facing metastatic breast cancer. "Many educational programs about breast cancer do not address metastatic disease. As a result, women with metastatic breast cancer may feel isolated," says Griggs. "Women need to know that metastatic breast cancer is usually highly treatable. Navigating the system and working effectively with your physicians and nurses, as well as making use of national and local resources, are critical to thriving with this disease." This program is one in a series of quarterly education sessions for women who are undergoing treatment and survivors of the disease, including families and friends. The cost is $20 per person, which includes dinner, and scholarships are available. To register, call Kristin Galvin-Burwick at x5-4797 or e-mail kristin_galvinburwick @urmc.rochester.edu.
