Learn more about wellness

"Color Your World Healthy," a symposium sponsored by the Medical Center Administrator's Group, will feature the latest information on wellness and other health-enhancing therapies. The event, which takes place on Wednesday, June 11, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Class of '62 Auditorium, includes information on naturopathic medicine, diet fads, polarity therapy, aromatherapy, massage, and other health-related topics.

Warner to host 'scholars'

The Warner Center for Professional Development and Education Reform is sponsoring the "Summer Scholars" program for educators who are looking for assistance with a project or research topic. The program provides group sessions and independent study support and access to resources and expertise of the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development and Rush Rhees Library. Rusti Berent, Warner School adjunct faculty member, and Kathleen McGowan, reference librarian at Rush Rhees, will coordinate support.

Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday from July 21 to August 1 in library. The cost is $300. For applications, visit www.rochester.edu/warner, call Marty Garland at x5-8270, or e-mail marty.garland@rochester.edu. The registration deadline is June 13.

Computer classes offered

The Educational Technology Center is currently planning a series of technology workshops for the week of August 18-22, geared toward College faculty and instructors.

Workshops planned include:

  • Faculty panel about use of WebCT (interactive online tools)
  • Ed Tech Center presentation about creation of digital course materials
  • Hands-on session for scanning and image manipulation
  • Hands-on session for creating lectures in Powerpoint
  • Hands-on session for building a course Web site
  • Hands-on session for creating a WebCT course

Library 'friends' hold dinner

The public is invited to the Friends of the University Libraries annual dinner at the Chatterbox Club in Rochester. Music theorist Arthur Samplaski will weave several hundred years of music history into a talk for the event at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 12. The annual event provides an opportunity for the Friends to present outstanding service awards to library staff, honor a library supporter with the Metzdorf Prize, and name the recipients of this year's grants.

Tickets are required for the dinner at 25 N. Goodman Street. and must be purchased in advance. For more information, call x5-4461.

Nutrition center offers screening

The Nutrition/Weight Management Center is sponsoring a Weight Management Screening, Assessment, and Intervention Workshop for adults and children on June 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Helen Wood Hall Lounge. The workshop is designed to help physicians, nurses, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals learn a more concise, motivational treatment approach to weight management with the use of a newly developed Screening and Assessment Toolkit.

Middle schoolers invited

The College Office of Special Programs is offering its first Rochester Scholars junior program for students entering grades 6, 7, or 8 in fall 2003. Students can select from four available courses for a weeklong class that runs from July 14-18. The classes begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Supervised drop-off times are available from 8 a.m. and pick-up times until 5 p.m.

Classes are taught by New York-certified teachers from surrounding districts, and course topics are designed to be of specific interest to middle school students. The cost per student is $245. Child entering kindergarten?

The KinderCare Learning Center, at 55 Castleman Road (behind Helen Wood Hall), currently has a few openings in its kindergarten program for the fall. The full-day program includes before- and after-school care and has a total of 16 children and 2 teachers.

The program, which includes math, reading, science, and social studies as well as art and music, runs from September through June, with care available during weeks that school is not in session and in the summer. For information, call Angelika Sternowski at x3-3677 or visit the center.
