Former senior advisor to the Medical Center CEO C. McCollister "Mac" Evarts assumed his new role as acting senior vice president with operational authority for the Medical Center on July 1.

The move enables Provost Charles Phelps to concentrate on leading the search for a permanent successor to Jay Stein, who resigned on May 16. Phelps will continue as acting CEO of the Medical Center, providing broad policy perspective on strategic direction and coordinating operations with the University.

"The University is indeed fortunate to have within its own ranks an individual with nearly 14 years of experience at the helm of an academic health center," says Phelps. "Mac has a clear grasp of the academic and health system issues and enjoys the respect of his colleagues at the Medical Center, throughout the University, and nationally. By naming him as acting senior vice president, we can ensure a smooth transition for Medical Center strategic initiatives, and I can continue to devote necessary energy to my full-time role as the University's chief academic officer."

Evarts '57M (MD), '64M (Res) recently retired from his position as CEO of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and senior vice president and dean of Penn State's College of Medicine. He began his medical career as a graduate of the School of Medicine and Dentistry before serving his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital. In 1964, he joined the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and over the next decade headed that institution's orthopaedic residency training program, ultimately serving as chair of its orthopaedics department.

Evarts, who returned to the Medical Center in 1974 as chair of orthopaedics, Dorris H. Carlson Professor of Orthopaedics, and orthopaedist-in-chief at Strong Memorial Hospital, is credited by many with transforming the Medical Center's orthopaedics department into a national hub for research and clinical care.

"I have long had a great affection for this Medical Center and am pleased to be able to contribute to its continued success," says Evarts. "I look forward to working with this superb administrative and academic team to continue its growth momentum."

In 1987, Evarts was recruited to serve as chief executive officer, senior vice president for health affairs, and dean of the College of Medicine at Penn State and the Hershey Medical Center. During his tenure, Evarts presided over the expansion of clinical services, the tripling of both the organization's faculty and its research funding, the construction of a biomedical research facility, and the initiation of a new medical school curriculum that led to a steady rise in applicants from a national pool.

After serving as CEO, senior vice president, and dean, Evarts became one of two named Penn State professors participating in teaching, writing, and consulting. He and his family relocated to Rochester last fall when he rejoined the Medical Center as senior advisor to Stein. Evarts continues to be involved in numerous societies, organizations, and corporate boards and to play an active role in the Association of Academic Health Centers.
