United Way: University raises $901,000
Just shy of the $1 million goal, the 2003 University campaign, which began in February, exceeded last year's total by 7 percent. Over 1,200 new donors participated in the campaign this year, with almost 40 percent of active employees contributing to the campaign. There also was a 15 percent growth in leadership giving by those contributing over $250 to the campaign, including an 18 percent increase in pledges over $1,000. The University was recognized by the local chapter with a 2003 Award of Excellence for increases in employee contributions. The 2003 Greater Rochester United Way campaign raised $34.5 million to support programs of almost 200 community service agencies serving over 825,000 people annually. Although the Rochester campaign was about $1 million short of its goal, coordinators were pleased with community support. "I cannot say enough about how proud I am of this community and how hard people work on behalf of people in need, despite the adversity they may be facing themselves," said United Way president and chief executive officer Joseph Calabrese in a recent statement. "Even though conditions are very difficult, everyone associated with the campaign--donors, volunteers, and United Way staff--gave it their best and can be proud of what they did accomplish this year under very difficult circumstances." For University-sponsored programs, this year's campaign will mean allocations totaling over $1.1 million from the United Way. "We all benefit from the safety net supported by the United Way," says Allen. "As the second largest employer in the Rochester area, our active participation in the campaign is a key to the success of this community-wide effort. Our generous response demonstrates that 'we take care of our own.'" Any employee still wishing to contribute may do so by contacting Allen at x5-4545.
