Canada's 'big brass' return to Eastman

For the second consecutive year, the Canadian Brass, one of the world's best-known brass quintet, pays a visit to Rochester for a special weekend residency at the Eastman School of Music. The highlight of the visit is a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 12, in Eastman Theatre.

Hailed as "the men who put brass music on the map" by The Washington Post, the five virtuosi of Canadian Brass that include tubist Charles Daellenbach '71E (PhD) have been entertaining audiences for more than three decades with their unique blend of humor and genre-blending repertoire. Performances include works in the classical repertoire as well as jazz, contemporary concert music, and popular songs intermixed with dialogue and theatrical effects.

Tickets for the concert range from $10-17.50 (with a $5 discount for University students with ID and $3 discount for faculty and staff with ID) and are available at Ticket Express by phone at 232-1900 or on the Web at Ticketmaster.com. Any remaining tickets will be available at the theatre box office one hour before the concert starts.

As part of its residency during the Eastman School summer session, the Canadian Brass will work with and coach professional, collegiate, and high school students in brass ensemble repertory. The weekend workshop will conclude with a free, open-to-the-public performance by these students at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 13, in Kilbourn Hall.

The Canadian Brass performance highlights a summer of music at the Eastman School that includes nearly 50 concerts and performances through August 7, including:

  • July 9: Eastman's new Community Education Division jazz pianist Paul Hofmann presents a concert of classical and jazz music featuring performers of all ages.

  • July 19: Hindustani Classical Music offers an evening of Indian classical music in Kilbourn Hall featuring local Indian musician Asawari Maggirwar.

  • July 21: Dulcimer player Mitzie Collins presents a world music extravaganza in Kilbourn Hall that includes historic fiddle tunes, ancient musical traditions of the shakuhachi, a Japanese end-blown flute, and the koto, a six-foot-long zither, as well as instrumental and vocal music of Macedonia and Bulgaria.

Most concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. All are open to the public and most are free. A complete concert schedule is available at www.rochester.edu/Eastman/summer.
