Elmwood lane reduction to begin July 7

Commuters may need to allow a few extra minutes for that morning and afternoon drive on Elmwood Avenue beginning July 7. That's when Facilities and Services anticipates lane reductions for installation of a new chilled water main from the Central Utilities Plant to the Medical Research Building.

A section of Elmwood Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in both directions, and lane configurations will change throughout the project, which is scheduled to wrap up August 13. In addition, there will be no left-hand turns in or out of the Medical Research Building driveway.

"I anticipate that the lane reduction for the chilled main project coupled with the ongoing bridge construction on Elmwood Avenue will affect traffic, especially during the busy morning and afternoon hours," says David Weed, director of central utilities and energy management. "While we will be monitoring the impact to traffic, we encourage faculty and staff to use alternate routes if possible to avoid the area until work is completed."

Pedestrians also are asked to avoid the construction area and to use crosswalks located at the intersection of Kendrick Road and Elmwood Avenue or at the front entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital.

A map of the areas affected and project updates will be available online at www.facilities.rochester.edu/notifications/elmwoodcwproject.htm. Questions or comments can be directed to Don Cramblette at extension x5-4147.

In addition, other ongoing construction projects affecting the University community will continue throughout the summer, including expansion of Park Lot, rehabilitation of Elmwood Avenue Bridge, and roof repairs at various locations.
