Drive away in a Cadillac

Golisano Children's Hospital is raffling off a 2003 CTS Cadillac on Saturday, October 25, as part of the hospital's gala celebration.

Tickets for the raffle are $100 each, and only 600 tickets will be sold. The winner is not required to be present at the gala to win the car, which is being provided by Valley Cadillac and ESL Federal Credit Union.

Sold on a first-come, first-served basis, tickets can be purchased by calling x3-5948. All proceeds benefit the Children's Hospital.

Fair matches students, employers

Career Center's Student Employment is holding its annual Job Fair on Tuesday, August 26. The fair gives University employers the opportunity to meet potential student employees and introduces new students to the diversity of student employment opportunities at the University.

Look for more information coming soon in the mail on how to reserve a space at the job fair or call Student Employment at x5-2138.

Race registration opens

Runners can be "early birds" and sign up now for the fourth annual Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race scheduled for Sunday, September 21. The 5K walk/run celebrates the suffragist's efforts to win women equal rights and opportunities, including her fight to win women admission to the University. Proceeds from the race benefit ongoing educational programs at the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership at the University and the Susan B. Anthony House.

The event also includes an on-campus kids' race for children 12 and under starting at 11 a.m., with all participants in the "fun run" receiving balloons and treats.

Participants can register online at www.rochester.edu/SBA/2003Race/race03.htm. Early bird registration, good through September 17, is $15. The fee after September 17 is $18. For more information or to receive a registration form by mail, call x5-8799.

Pediatric surgical award offered

Applications are being accepted for the new Thomas Putnam, M.D., Award, funded by a gift from Michael Pichichero, professor of microbiology and immunology. The award offers up to $25,000 annually--with individual award amounts varying based on the number of acceptable submissions--for research to benefit children coping with ambulatory pediatric surgical concerns.

The award will fund research with a high likelihood of producing publishable contributions for up to three years per award. Eligible applicants must be board-certified or board-eligible pediatric surgical providers of the University/Strong Health. The application deadline is January 1.

To request an application, send a letter of inquiry with a brief, one-paragraph description of the proposed research to Walter Pegoli, chief of pediatric surgery, Department of Surgery, Box SURG, School of Medicine and Dentistry, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY, 14642.

Research participants needed

Clinical research study: bipolar disorder--Volunteers between the ages of 6 and 17 years with bipolar disorder may be eligible for a Medical Center research study testing omega-3 fatty acid, a health-food supplement. The study consists of eight visits over 16 weeks. Families will be paid $20 for each completed visit. For more information and/ or to make an appointment, call x5-8389.
