In BriefWalk/Run for transplant programIndividuals and teams can register to participate in the third annual Bill Sweet Memorial Walk/Run scheduled for September 20 at the Genesee Valley Park Roundhouse Pavilion. Pledges collected by participants benefit the Organ Transplant Program at Strong Memorial Hospital. Sweet was a longtime Friends of Strong volunteer and the first Rochester-area resident to receive a heart transplant. Registration for the three-mile walk/run is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; the event begins at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in numerous categories. Food and entertainment follow at noon. Med Center hosts charity auctionDonations are being accepted for the third annual Charity Art Auction. Proceeds benefit Alternatives for Battered Women, an organization that helps women in abusive relationships find a safe place to stay, legal assistance, education, or other needed resources. The auction will be held on Friday, October 17, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will showcase items made by medical students. Community members are encouraged to donate arts/crafts items, baked goods, and other handmade items or to volunteer as event organizers. Pick up a pedometerThe School of Nursing is selling pedometers to encourage healthy lifestyles and support Project Believe, a communitywide initiative led by the Medical Center to help make Rochester the healthiest community in America by 2020. As part of the promotion, the School of Nursing is challenging faculty and staff to sign up for the "Stepping Out Now Challenge," a four-week team fitness program that continues through September 29.
The pedometers are $20 each and can be purchased by contacting Eva Bellis or Marlene Downs at x3-3619 or x3-2573.
Docs get the skinny on fatAtkins or South Beach? Strict diet and exercise or just exercise alone? "The Obesity Epidemic: Current Findings and Practical Approaches" regional symposium will provide answers to many diet-related questions and offer physicians and other healthcare professionals the latest research on effective treatments for weight gain and obesity. The symposium, held October 2-3 at the Holiday Inn Rochester Airport, is open to physicians, dietitians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals from upstate New York. Faculty from the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine and Dentistry, along with several nationally prominent speakers, will highlight successful methods for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of obesity in adults and children, including useful behavior and physical activity strategies and successful family interventions. Research participants neededWomen's Health--The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is conducting a research study on biological sisters to examine the effect of birthing on the pelvis. To be eligible, women must be 45 years or older with a biological sister. One of the sisters must have given birth to at least one child and the other must have never given birth. Participants receive up to two free gynecological exams and payment for participation. Call x3-2996 for more information.
