Olympian to speak at Anthony Race
Commemorating Anthony's fight to win equal rights and opportunities for women, the race raises funds to benefit ongoing educational programs at the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership at the University and the Susan B. Anthony House. Turner's own life is a story of determination. Nine years after retiring from short track speed skating to pursue a professional singing career, the Rochester native returned to the sport to pursue her dream of Olympic gold. Ignoring critics who questioned her ability to compete after such a long hiatus, Turner won gold and silver medals in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. In 1994, Turner returned to compete in the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, where she earned another gold medal as well as a bronze. In 1998, she surprised critics once again and competed in her third Olympics in Nagano, Japan. In addition to pursuing her music career, Turner gives motivational talks, has served as an analyst on ESPN and SportsChannel, and has appeared on numerous talk shows and sports documentaries. She also has made public service announcements or appearances for the United Way, the Amateur Athletic Association, Special Olympics, and the American Cancer Society.
