Legacy dinner to honor women leaders
he achievements of women in the University community will be celebrated during the 2004 Susan B. Anthony Legacy Dinner on Thursday, February 5. Among those to be honored is Jean Barr, professor of piano accompanying and chamber music at the Eastman School of Music, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Established in 1997 by the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership, the award is presented annually to a University alumna, trustee, faculty member, or administrator who has demonstrated strong leadership qualities, personal as well as professional success, and has served as a role model for other women.
Considered a pioneer in her field, Barr was the first keyboard artist in the United States to be awarded a doctoral degree in accompanying. She is the founding director of the graduate programs in piano accompanying and chamber music at Eastman, has performed with many distinguished artists, and is in demand as a guest lecturer and master teacher in the United States and abroad. In nominating Barr for the award, Elizabeth Marvin, dean of academic affairs at Eastman, and Marie Rolf, associate dean for graduate studies at Eastman, noted: "Jean Barr is more than a teacher and program advisor to her students. She is a mentor, confidante, and role model extraordinaire . . . a person whose spirit, vision, and achievements have made a significant difference in the lives of others. She upholds the highest level of artistry and the finest professional skills as a collaborative artist." Several women students also will be honored for their accomplishments and contributions to University life. Three students will receive awards sponsored by the University Women's Club. Rachael Gabriel '05 and Marilyn Lopez '05 are the recipients of the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship, and Andrea Ferrara '04 will be honored with the Susan B. Anthony Prize. Also, Sheila Vakharia '04 will be presented with the Fanny R. Bigelow Prize, and Take Five student Carmen Lewis will receive the Jane R. Plitt Award. The event, cosponsored by the Anthony Center and the University Women's Club, pays tribute to Anthony's campaign to win women admission to the University and honors the activities of student leaders, faculty, staff, and alumnae. The dinner is open to the public and starts at 6 p.m. in the May Room of Wilson Commons. Reservations are required. For more details, call the Anthony Center at x5-8799.
