In BriefWarner sponsors workshopThe Warner Center for Professional Development and Education Reform is offering a workshop focused on the methods used to teach reading strategies. Designed for teachers of grades 1 to 5, the workshop will be held Thursdays, March 4, 11, and 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Twelve Corners Middle School in Brighton. Joy Moss, literature specialist at the Harley Lower School and adjunct associate professor at the Warner School, will lead the sessions. The fee is $60, and continuing education credits are available to participants. The registration deadline is February 27. Try tai chiThe Medical Center Fitness and Wellness Center will be offering a tai chi course on Wednesday evenings from 5:20 to 6:35 p.m. The course begins on February 25 and continues for seven weeks. First aid course offeredAn American Heart Association first aid course will be held on Wednesday, April 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, LeChase Room (G-9576). Join the Heart WalkThe University and Strong Health invite faculty and staff to join the fight against heart disease and stroke by participating in the American Heart Association (AHA) American Heart Walk on Saturday, March 20, at the Blue Cross Arena. The goal is to raise $25,000 to support the AHA, which provides $1.4 million for research in the Rochester area, predominantly to the University. Members of the University community are invited to join a team for the March 20 event or to sponsor a colleague who is willing to participate. Up for a challenge?University students, faculty, and staff are invited to sign up for the Spring Fitness Challenge, a 12-week, team-driven challenge to get fit and win prizes along the way. As part of the challenge, participants record physical activity and earn points toward prizes for type of activity and duration. Additional points are earned for weight loss (as measured by body mass index). Prizes will be awarded for individuals and teams that earn the most points and show the biggest reduction in body mass index. All participants receive a shirt and have free access to the Fitness and Wellness Center during the challenge. Registration is $15. Materials must be completed and returned no later than Friday, March 19, and all participants must have their starting body mass index measured by Thursday, March 25.
Network group formingFaculty and professional staff recently hired at the University and others who are interested in meeting administrators, staff, and faculty in various schools and departments are invited to join a new networking group forming at the University.
