Problem solvers unite for engineers week
Coordinated through the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), activities on campus included an alumni networking session, a career and internship fair, a mine-retriever design competition, "Ultimate EngiNerd" Quiz Bowl Challenge, a high school conference as well as free tutoring sessions in Rush Rhees Library for all introductory engineering, math, or science classes--a service sponsored by Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society. Nine engineering societies on campus helped organize and oversee events, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), which held the design competition "Mine Madness" on February 25 in Wilson Commons. Senior mechanical engineers worked in teams to build robots that could navigate a simulated minefield and clear it of mines in three minutes or less. The competition was part of the mechanical engineering senior design class. John Ballou, an academic advisor for the College Center for Academic Support, who helped publicize and coordinate events along with Lisa Norwood, assistant dean for SEAS, and Elayne Stewart, a SEAS administrative assistant, says the annual event gives students a chance to share with others what it means to be an engineer. "It's a chance for engineering students to celebrate what they do and to raise awareness for the engineering professions. Engineering is alive and well at the University, and we want to let everyone know."
