In Brief

Local paper to profile University

A group of reporters and photographers will comb University campuses on Tuesday, April 13, in search of images and stories as part of the Democrat and Chronicle's continuing series, "Day in the Life." The goal is to capture a typical, unscripted day on local college and university campuses. Nazareth, Rochester Institute of Technology, and St. John Fisher already have been profiled.

About 20 Democrat and Chronicle staff members will fan out from the River Campus to the Medical Center, School of Nursing, Eastman School of Music, Memorial Art Gallery, and wherever they see stories to tell. This special section of the paper--along with photographs, a "virtual tour" of campuses, statistics, and sound bites on the paper's Web site--will be published on Friday, April 23.

Up for a challenge?

Registration is open for the Chase Corporate Challenge. The race begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 27, at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Walkers and runners are welcome. Participants must have been employed by the University for at least three months, with a minimum of 25 hours per week. The registration fee is $16 and includes refreshments.

Registration forms are available at the Medical Center Fitness & Wellness Center (G-5680), at the Strong Memorial Hospital information desk in the main lobby, at the Friends of Strong office (1-1230), and online at http://intranet.urmc.rochester.edu. Registration deadline is 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13. For more information, call Heather VanOrden, team captain, at x5-2706.

Give blood

A University faculty and staff blood drive for the American Red Cross will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, in the May Room of Wilson Commons. Each semester, two blood drives are organized by the Office of the College Dean of Students to seek donations from students as well as faculty and staff.

People are eligible if they have not donated blood since February 19. Students also are welcome to donate blood at this drive. The goal for the drive is 30 units of blood. Since the start of this academic year, students, faculty, and staff have supplied 412 units, compared to 395 units last year.

Appointments are preferred and can by made by contacting Jason Smith at x5-4085.

Hiring a student?

For those departments planning to hire college students this summer, there are three hiring options to consider:

  • 506/Graduate Student Appointment Form

Used exclusively for hiring University graduate students who receive a stipend, Form 506 helps coordinate information between the Bursar's Office, the hiring department, and the Payroll and Employee Records Center.

  • Student Employment

This option should be used for all full-time matriculated University students not hired using a 506 form. Contact the Student Employment Office at x5-2138 to post a position or visit www.rochester.edu/careercenter.

  • As a staff member through Human Resources

Use this option for students who cannot be hired through Student Employment or by using form 506. This includes part-time students, nonmatriculated University students, and University students who have graduated and will continue to work past May 19 as well as students, co-ops, and interns from other universities.

For questions related to hiring students or for more details on hiring options, contact the Office of Human Resources at one of the following locations: Medical Center, x5-2513; Employment Center, x5-4989; River Campus, x5-3396; and Strong Staffing, x5-7873.

Summer camp starts June 28

The Medical Center Fitness & Wellness Center (G-5680) offers children an opportunity to learn new skills, adapt to group experiences, and enjoy the summer with a variety of sport activities and field trips. The Fun Fitness Camp is a New York Statecertified summer camp for children ages 7 to 12 and is open to all University-affiliated families. The camp runs from June 28 through August 27, from 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Call x5-2706 for information or to obtain a registration packet.

Ushers needed

The Commencement Committee is looking for staff and students to participate as ushers in the College Commencement ceremony on May 16. Ushers assist with final preparations, greet family and friends, distribute ceremony programs, assist guests to special seating areas, provide directions, and answer questions. To sign up or for additional information, contact Scott Verrenti at x3-1765 or at scott.verrenti@rochester.edu.
