Eastman concerts offer Asian flair

The Eastman School will wrap up its April concert calendar with performances by Eastman's Balinese gamelan ensemble on Monday, April 26, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, which will preview its upcoming Asian tour on Wednesday, April 28.

Culminating Eastman's annual World Music Series, Gamelan Lila Muni (Heavenly Sound) will be joined by prominent Balinese musicians and dancers in an evening of traditional and contemporary Hindu-related music and dance. Founded in 1993, the ensemble uses a variety of percussion instruments such as metallophones, gongs, and drums, but can also include flutes, string instruments, and voices.

Currently, more than 400 gamelan ensembles exist outside of Indonesia: in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to Gamelan Lila Muni, the Eastman School is home to two other gamelan ensembles: Gamelan Kembang Salju and the Eastman Youth Gamelan. Each year, the ensembles perform throughout the northeastern United States and in Canada.

The Eastman Wind Ensemble, which this spring embarks on its eighth Asian concert tour, will offer local audiences a preview during the April 28 program that includes works by Bach, Bennett, Mark Camphouse, Bernstein, Lauridsen, and the world premiere of Ewazen's Danzante. Presented by the Sony Music Foundation, the tour will wind its way through Japan, Taiwan, and Macao in more than one dozen concerts from May 18 to June 14. Professor of Conducting and Ensembles Mark Scatterday says the tour will be an educational and challenging musical experience for the 52 performing students and an exciting and entertaining experience for audiences.
