EDC wins minority recruitment grant
The award will be used primarily to recruit minority students for dental academic careers and to establish academic partnerships that facilitate advanced training and career development. Funds also will be used to create mentor programs and community-based practices designed to support minority academicians and researchers. Professor Cyril Meyerowitz, director of the center and chair of the Department of Dentistry, credits Stanley Handelman, professor emeritus of dentistry, in helping to secure the award. "Stan has been a driving force in our minority recruitment initiative as part of a Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration grant in the mid-eighties. He was instrumental in helping build our relationship with Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Tennessee. We are proud to have a number of successful alumni who attended the Eastman postdoctoral programs because of his efforts," says Meyerowitz. "The grant award will help us provide other Meharry students with the opportunity to visit Rochester and Eastman Dental Center to consider our programs," he adds.
