ITS offers network security protection

n integrated firewall service is now available to increase the protection computer users currently receive through the network and through antivirus programs. The service, offered by Information Technology Services (ITS), provides additional network security on a departmental network, making it more difficult for hackers to break into computers, department networks, and critical systems.

This comprehensive firewall service is part of URNet, the University's new higher-speed network capabilities that were implemented in fall 2003.

"The service is protected by sophisticated monitoring equipment, so faculty and staff can be assured protection is always in place," says Norm Acunis, assistant director at ITS. "This offering provides a new layer of protection for department computers, critical data, and the network they reside on."

ITS staff are prepared to meet with customers personally to discuss any questions they may have and to establish a plan to protect their networks. As part of that plan, customers will receive an estimate of one-time costs and confirmation of recurring costs. A Web form to schedule meetings is available at www.rochester.edu/its/firewall. The same location contains a Web form for changing the definitions or rules that protect the department's resources.
