Committee adds student member

Arnab Datta '06 is the second student to be named to the 18-member University Advisory Committee, which will assist in selecting the University's next president. Datta, a political science, math, and philosophy major, and graduate student Alex Spilman Lanning '01, who is also on the University Advisory Committee, cochair the Student Advisory Group. The committee advises the 11-member Trustees' Presidential Search Committee. That committee will recommend candidates to the Board of Trustees. Become a Rochester Scholar

Rochester-area high school and middle school students can learn about anything from international politics to ship design to yoga in the University's Rochester Scholars and Rochester Scholars Jr. summer programs. Students can select two subjects (one to study in the morning and one to study in the afternoon) from 50 available classes.

High school students attend a two-week program, which runs July 19-30; middle school students attend a one-week program, which runs July 12-16. Tuition for Rochester Scholars is $700 ($625 with University discount) and tuition for Rochester Scholars Jr. is $295 ($250 with University discount). Tuition covers all course materials, lunch, swimming, and related expenses. Discounts apply for children and grandchildren of alumni and all University employees.

Author profiles landscape designer

Robin Karson, executive director of the Library of American Landscape History in Amherst, Mass., and author of the award-winning biography Fletcher Steele, Landscape Architect: An Account of the Gardenmaker's Life 1885­1971, will speak at the 32nd annual meeting and dinner of the Friends of the University Libraries on Thursday, June 10, at 6 p.m. Karson has lectured widely on the Rochester-born Steele and on American landscape design; her talk is titled "Dreams and Preferences: The Remarkable Gardens of Fletcher Steele."

Tickets for the dinner and lecture at the Chatterbox Club at 25 N. Goodman Street are $55. For more information and to make reservations, call x5-4461.

Wynne Center plans fund-raiser

The Medical Center's Wynne Center for Family Research will hold its annual fund-raising dinner on Saturday, September 11, at the Artisan Works Gallery in Rochester. Ann McDaniel, vice president of the Washington Post Co., will speak on "Inside the 2004 Race: Behind the Scenes with Bush and Kerry." A former managing editor and Washington bureau chief at Newsweek, she brings insight from her personal contact with many politicians in Washington. Tickets are $100 per person. New gallery audio tour debuts

Memorial Art Gallery visitors now are able to learn more about gallery director Grant Holcomb's favorite works with the new "Director's Audiotour." The self-guided tour uses a lightweight, state-of-the-art digital wand that is compatible with hearing aids and has features for visually impaired users. Visitors can view the works on the tour in any sequence. The new audiotour is available at the gallery's admission desk for $4 ($3 for gallery members). Excerpts from the audiotour will be available in June on the gallery's Web site, http://mag.rochester.edu.

Therapy institute to be held in June

The 11th annual Medical Family Therapy Institute will be held at the Medical Center June 14-18. The institute's goal is to provide training for health care and mental health professionals interested in collaboration when working with patients and families dealing with illness. Training blends clinical presentations, small-group learning, and skill development. The institute is presented by the Family Therapy Training Program of the Department of Psychiatry.
