Iris garden beautifies campus

The future site of a new iris garden in Bausch & Lomb Riverside Park will be announced Thursday, June 24, with an 11:30 a.m. ceremony near the pedestrian bridge. The Ayame Garden, "iris garden" in Japanese, will be filled with plantings of Japanese and Louisiana irises to recognize the relationship between Rochester and its sister city, Hammatsu, Japan. A new Friendship Garden at Highland Park will also be dedicated earlier on Thursday.

In addition, the Rare Books and Special Collections Library is exhibiting books and prints from the Ellwanger and Barry Nursery Library, and from its other collections. The exhibit, "Friendship in Bloom," is free and open to the public through September 15.

Get active this summer

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is offering a variety of sports camps throughout the summer to get kids moving. If their interest is basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, or even a variety of different sports--including Frisbee golf--kids can attend a one- or two-week camp session designed to hone their skills.

All camps are taught by University coaches. Sessions begin June 28 and are scheduled through August.

For more information, visit www.rochester.edu/athletics/camps/index.html.

Bells will be ringing this summer

The distinctive sounds of the Hopeman Memorial Carillon, located in the tower of Rush Rhees Library, will ring out this summer in a series of four free concerts beginning July 8, sponsored by the Department of Music at the College.

Each concert in the Hopeman Memorial Carillon Summer Recital Series will begin at 7 p.m., rain or shine, and will last about an hour.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic suppers to the Eastman Quadrangle.

The carillon, Rochester's largest musical instrument and one of only six carillons in New York state, consists of 50 stationary cast bronze bells weighing almost 3 1/2 tons. An electronic clock controls the bells to automatically sound a chime every quarter hour, but a manual mechanism allows musicians to perform in recital or for special events like Commencement.

For more information on the series, call x5-2828.

'Aussie' lectures on gardens

Heather Pryor, an internationally known horticulturalist who is an expert in producing hybrid plants and flowers, will speak about her Sydney, Australia, gardens in a lecture on Friday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m. in Strong Auditorium. Her talk, "An Aussie Looks at Horticulture Down Under," is sponsored by the University Arboretum and the certified nursery professionals program of the GardenScape Professionals Association. Admission is $5 for the general public and $3 for master gardeners and certified nursery professionals. A limited number of free passes for University faculty and staff are available. For more information and tickets, call x3-5815.

Firm contributes to optics building

Semiconductor and microelectronics firm KLA-Tencor has contributed $100,000 to the University's fund for the new, 91,000-square-foot building that will house the optics and biomedical engineering departments.

According to KLA-Tencor, the advancements in optical technology made possible by the University have played an important role in maintaining KLA-Tencor's leadership in the semiconductor process control market. Many of KLA-Tencor's employees are alumni of the University.

Hone your music skills

Researchers invite faculty input

Like most medical schools, the University has changed its faculty promotion system in recent years to better reflect the diversity of faculty interests, talents, and activities. Faculty commitment to academics and their productivity have been linked to their compensation of promotion criteria and mentoring. Vivian Lewis and Ann Dozier are performing a survey on faculty's opinions of the promotion system and mentoring practices at the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Faculty are invited to take the Web-based survey at www.courses.rochester.edu/URMC_surveys/faculty.
