Book sale set for August

The Friends of the University Libraries will hold its 32nd annual book sale Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, on the main floor of Rush Rhees Library. A Friends membership preview will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, and a bag sale is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday on all remaining items. Money from the sale supports the University libraries and their collections.

The Friends are still seeking donations of books on all topics, including textbooks that are less than five years old. For information about dropping off books or becoming a member of the Friends, call x5-4461.

Teen pageant seeks judges

The Conference and Events Office is hosting the Miss Teen of New York pageant July 24 and 25, and pageant officials are looking for eight volunteer judges. Judges will be required to be present from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For details on the pageant, including the judging criteria, visit www.missteenofamerica.com. For more information, contact Scott Verrenti at scott.verrenti@rochester.edu or x3-1765.

MAG council hosts garden tour

Using flowers and greenery as a canvas, six Rochester gardeners have followed the Impressionist tradition of creating outdoor art ("en plein air"), and on Saturday, July 10, these gardens will be open to the public on the Gallery Council's Garden Tour.

Visitors will tour a "gardener's garden" with outdoor "rooms" for kitchen herbs, cold frames, and composting bins; a prize-winning woodland garden with water features and a meditative feel; fish ponds and gazebo on the side of Pinnacle Hill; a large pool garden with alcoves under a beech tree; a sprawling secret garden with sculptures, hidden behind a green hedge on a busy street; and a perennial garden-in-the-round laid out in quadrants.

All gardens are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for visitors to tour at their own pace. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Gallery's admission desk or by calling 473-7720, ext. 3014.

Vendor showcase at Wilson Commons

A vendor showcase of meeting-related services and products will be held on Tuesday, July 13, from noon to 3 p.m., in the Hirst Lounge in Wilson Commons.

The showcase, featuring representatives from area hotels and attractions and from the Conference and Events Office, provides faculty and staff with the opportunity to discuss upcoming meetings and events with professional event organizers and get information about on- and off-campus venues for lectures, receptions, or other programs; local sightseeing opportunities; and ways to save on accommodations and guest excursions.

This is the second year for the event; more than 300 people attended last year's showcase.

For more information, contact Celia Palmer at x3-4571 or Bryan Rotach at x5-1459.
