The snow finally stopped

Sometimes it seems like Rochester winters never end. But in hopes that the 200304 winter would eventually give way to spring, University Facilities and Services held the "When Will It End" contest, which challenged University faculty and staff to pick the last day of the season that Rochester would receive measurable snowfall.

Of the 133 entries, Amy Bray, administrative assistant for the philosophy department, chose the winning date, April 4, when 4.2 inches of snow fell, according to the National Weather Service.

"Although we received trace amounts after this date, no measurable snow was received at the Greater Rochester International Airport," says Dan Schied, manager of Horticulture and Grounds.

Twenty-eight people guessed that the last snowfall would occur between April 1 and 7, but only Bray chose April 4. Her prize was a copper snow gauge with which she can measure future snowfall in her own yard.

Last year, the Mt. Sicard Contest challenged people to pick the day when the last traces of Mt. Sicard would melt. The giant pile of snow at the end of Intercampus Drive, the final resting place for all snow removed from the rest of campus, was named after Glen Sicard, director of Parking and Transportation Services.
