August 19, 26, September 2, 6:30 p.m. Through September 5--Rochester Biennial. This exhibition showcases artists who live and work in upstate New York. Participating artists include Joy Adams of Trumansburg (painting), Anne Currier of Alfred (ceramics), Judith Olson Gregory of Rochester (mixed media), Larry Kagan of Troy (shadow sculpture), John McQueen of Saratoga Springs (fiber), and Karen Sardisco of Rochester (drawing). Through 2004--Protected for Eternity: The Coffins of Pa-debehu-Aset. Showcases the lavishly decorated inner coffin of an Egyptian official of the fourth century B.C.E. and other ancient artifacts. Through August 29--Pompelmous, Surinam and Centaurea Cyanus: Botanical Prints from the Collection of Jacquelyn and William Pinch. This exhibition showcases 17th- and 18th-century engravings from some of the most famous botanists in Germany, England, and Holland. The 40 works include prints from early issues of The Botanical Magazine, which began publishing in 1787. The exhibition is one of a number of floral-themed events which celebrate the sister-city alliance between Rochester and Hamamatsu, Japan. River Campus Through August 24--Shafts of Sunlight. An exhibit of selected paintings by Rochester artist Mary Orwen. The Gallery at the Art and Music Library, Rush Rhees Library, ground floor. Through September 15--Friendship in Bloom: Four Centuries of Floral Images to Celebrate the Iris Friendship Garden in Highland Park. Through September 24--Early Printing at Venice, 14771558. This exhibition spotlights some of the finest examples of Venetian printing and offers a glimpse at the social and intellectual world of the Italian Renaissance. This exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of Eastman's birth and centers on his relationship with University President Rush Rhees. Great Hall, Rush Rhees Library, second floor. Explores infant care after the newborn period through the first birthday. Fee: $50/couple for three-week mini-series or $20 per individual class. Registration required. 1 to 3 p.m. August 17, 21, 24, 28, 31, September 4--Exercising for Childbirth. A nonaerobic exercise class that helps stretch and tone the muscles used in labor and birth. Fee required. Registration and health care provider permission required. August 17, 24, 31: 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.; August 21, 28, September 4: 9 to 10 a.m. August 18--Breastfeeding. Basics of breastfeeding taught by certified lactation consultants. Fee: $35/mom and support person. Registration required. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. August 21--Big Brothers- and Sisters-to-Be Class. The "ins and outs" of being a big brother or sister are covered in this class for expectant siblings and their parents. Fee: $15/parent/guardian(s) and child, $5 each additional child. Training for parents, grandparents, and child care providers taught by certified American Red Cross instructors. Fee: $40/person. Through August--Prepared Childbirth Classes. Four-class series focuses on preparing for childbirth, including relaxation and breathing techniques and positions for labor and birth, comfort measures including medications, coach's role, preparing for baby, and what to expect during your hospital stay.
