Show your stuffRochester's oldest and largest arts and crafts festival, the M&T Bank Clothesline Festival at the Memorial Art Gallery, invites artists to apply to exhibit their work in this year's festival. The event, which takes place Saturday, September 11, and Sunday, September 12, showcases work by 600 artists from western and central New York. Exhibitors must be at least 18 years old. Troupe 'Steps' up the satireThe Capitol Steps, a comedy troupe of former and current Congressional staffers, brings its political satire to Strong Auditorium on Friday, September 10, at 8 p.m., as part of the College Convocation events. The group's appearance is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and Wilson Commons Student Activities. Admission is $15 for the general public, $5 for undergraduate students with ID, and $10 for graduate students, faculty, and staff with ID. Course teaches patient safetyThe faculty of the Division of Clinical Practice Evaluation in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine are offering a minicourse on the science, tools, and strategies for achieving safer patient care. The certificate course consists of 10 sessions, each of which will be offered twice a month from September 9 through January 20, 2005. Sessions are scheduled on Thursdays, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There is no fee for the course. Course materials and snacks will be provided. Parking fees will be the responsibility of the registrant. Calling all thespiansThe International Theatre Program will be holding auditions, open to University students, faculty, and staff, for the upcoming season. Productions include A Mouthful of Birds, a contemporary reworking of the Dionysian myth by Caryl Churchill and David Lan, and Ionesco's absurdist classic The Bald Soprano. Auditions will be held on Friday, September 3, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, September 4, at 2 p.m., in the Todd Theatre lobby. Prospective actors may prepare a monologue from any play of their choice, but those trying out without an audition piece or monologue may still be eligible to be cast. Those wishing to audition are encouraged to read the plays before auditioning. Copies are available on reserve at Rush Rhees Library and at the theater program office in 107 Todd Union. New outlets for Eastman ticketsBeginning August 16, tickets for all Eastman School performances will be sold through the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra box office and Wegmans home video departments. While many Eastman concerts--particularly those featuring student orchestras and ensembles--are free and remain so, the Kilbourn, Eastman-Ranlet, and World Music concert series, as well as three operas and occasional special events, do require tickets. Tickets for the Faculty Artist Series will continue to be sold at the Kilbourn Hall door only, one hour before concert time.
Take back your e-mailInformation Technology Services has instituted a new, comprehensive, and flexible Web-based e-mail spam management service to protect University e-mail users with mail.rochester.edu and troi.rochester.edu accounts against spam and unsolicited e-mails. The service, PureMessage, replaces SpamAssassin as the current spam-management service. The service, which is NetID-based, automatically updates and deploys spam management services as new threats or workarounds arise. Wilson Days are here againFaculty and staff are invited to participate in this year's Wilson Days, the University tradition of introducing new undergraduates to Rochester through community action. About 1,200 volunteers are expected to travel to sites in the city and suburbs on Monday, August 30, and Tuesday, August 31. The days will be spent working on community service projects while getting to know the Class of 2008. Consider joining a group at one of a variety of locations with local nonprofit agencies. Transportation and lunch are provided. Volunteers will be needed from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on either day. Volleyball, soccer leagues formingRegistration for the fall 2004 coed volleyball and soccer leagues at the Medical Center is open from August 16 through September 10. The games, which begin September 20, are held in the Fitness and Wellness Center between 6:30 and 10 p.m. Registration is open to nonmembers of the Fitness and Wellness Center with University IDs.
