Meliora Weekend 2004 is coming
Now in its fourth year, the weekend, which is organized by the Office of College Advancement, combines homecoming, reunion, and family weekend with speakers and events for members of the University community and local residents. Venues will extend from the River Campus and the Medical Center to the banks of the Genesee River for the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta on Sunday, October 10. Political consultants James Carville and Mary Matalin, humanitarian and medical anthropologist Paul Farmer, and award-winning writers Edward P. Jones and Rita Dove are among the two dozen speakers and discussion leaders. Meliora Weekend also encompasses programs presented by faculty members, performances by student groups, sporting activities, and an array of social events. Special programs organized by the Department of English, Rush Rhees Library, the Anthony Center for Women's Leadership, and the Department of Anthropology will add another dimension to the weekend. The School of Nursing will host a panel discussion on the solutions to the crisis in nursing on Friday, and on Sunday afternoon, ground will be broken for a new biomedical engineering and optics facility. It will bring together the Institute of Optics and the Department of Biomedical Engineering in a state-of-the-art complex near the institute's current location in the Wilmot Building. There is no fee for University students, faculty, and staff, except for ticketed meals and entertainment, but online registration is required. Alumni, parents of students, and members of the public also can register online for $15 a person. To register, visit www.rochester.edu/alumni/meliora2004. ![]()
