Ceremonies mark new school year

Academic divisions across the University will celebrate the beginning of the school year with convocation and other ceremonies for students, faculty, and staff.

This year's Convocation for the College will take place at noon on Friday, September 10, on Dandelion Square. Classes in the College are canceled from noon until 2 p.m. so that members of the College community can attend the events.

The ceremony includes presentation of the Goergen Awards for contributions to undergraduate education in the College. The awards, which were first presented in 1997, are named for and sponsored by trustee and former board chairman Robert B. Goergen '60 and his wife, Pamela.

The formal ceremonies will be followed by a picnic on Wilson Commons Quadrangle. Following the picnic, the annual Activities Fair, which showcases the more than 150 student clubs and organizations on campus, will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Dandelion Square. The political satire group the Capitol Steps will perform at Strong Auditorium at 8 p.m.

In the event of rain, the College ceremony will be held in Strong Auditorium, picnic fare will be served in Douglass Dining Hall, and the Activities Fair will take place in the Field House of the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center.

The Eastman School's Convocation will take place on Thursday, September 2, at 2:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall, with remarks by James Undercofler, director and dean of the school and professor of music education, introduction of new faculty, a musical presentation, and presentation of special awards. Zvi Zeitlin, Distinguished Professor of Violin, will receive the Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

The Medical Center's Convocation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 21, at 4 p.m. in the Class of '62 auditorium. On Friday, August 13, first-year students received their lab coats at the annual "White Coat Ceremony" at the Interfaith Chapel. William Hall, professor of general medicine, and Ra'Kerry Rahman '05 spoke at the ceremony.
