RE: Political Activities

As the election season arrives, the Provost's Office reminds faculty and staff about Policy #112 concerning political activities. Members of the University community who wish to participate in political activities and to express themselves in the public media on political or social issues do so as individual citizens.

The University encourages those who wish to express their views on political issues, to participate in political campaigns, to offer themselves as candidates for office, and to hold office to do so as a personal activity. Such activity should not involve use of University facilities or resources (including e-mail and other electronic communication systems) and should not jeopardize the University's tax exempt status. Individuals should not use their positions or supervisory status within the University to attempt to persuade or influence the political views of other members of the University community.

Members of the University community who have questions about the policy or who feel the policy has been violated should notify their respective department chair, dean, or director or may contact the University Intercessor at x5-9125. For more about the policy, visit www.rochester.edu/working/hr/policies/pdfpolicies/112.pdf.
