Parking notice for Library LotWhile minimal disruption to employee parking is expected during Meliora Weekend, parking arrangements in Library Lot will need to be altered Friday, October 8, to accommodate attendees with special parking needs. As a result, limited first-come, first-served parking will be available to faculty and staff on Friday. Overflow parking will be provided in the River Road Lot with shuttle service to River Campus from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Conference gets philosophicalA renowned University of Oxford philosophy professor will be the keynote speaker for the University Graduate Epistemology Conference on Friday and Saturday, September 24 and 25. Timothy Williamson will speak at 5 p.m. Saturday in Room 2-110D of Dewey Hall. This is the third epistemology conference organized and presented by the graduate students in the Department of Philosophy. Students from schools across the country will present their work on a myriad of topics in epistemology that explore the nature of knowledge and its related concepts. Conference hours are 1:30 to 6:10 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. All presentations will be made in Dewey 2-110D. Check out free filmsUniversity students, faculty, and staff can enjoy free admission to the screenings of films by famed Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu at the George Eastman House Dryden Theatre. The series, already under way, continues on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. through October, with the exception of October 13. The series spans Ozu's silent and sound film career and is part of a retrospective honoring the director on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Ozu made 54 films before his death in 1963. Admission is free for those with University ID. The series is cosponsored by the Film and Media Studies Program, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, and the department's Japanese section. For more information, call x5-5757.
Series targets survivorsAnyone battling cancer or another life-threatening disease may find an upcoming lecture series on coping with diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship helpful. Cosponsored by the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and other area cancer organizations, the free, weekly lectures mark Cancer Awareness Month in September. The lectures and a cooking demonstration will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through October 6 at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Abracadabra!Jim Karol, a professional magician who uses wit and audience participation to showcase mind and memory skills, will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, October 2, in Strong Auditorium. The holder of three Guinness world records, including one for throwing a playing card more than 200 feet, Karol is author of the book 50 Ways to Hustle Your Friends as well as two additional books on improving memory skills. Last callJulieve Jubin's photographs of necessary objects around the house will be displayed through Thursday, September 30, in the Gallery at the Art and Music Library, located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library. The 14 photographs on exhibit reveal close-ups of simple and ordinary items. Jubin received her master of fine arts degree from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester and is now assistant professor of art at the State University of New York at Oswego.
