FYIJack Caton '73 (Mas), clinical professor in the Eastman Department of Dentistry and program director and chair of the Division of Periodontology, has been named recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics Gold Medal Award in recognition of his contributions in the field of periodontal research, education, and service. Caton will receive the award during the 90th Annual Academy Meeting held this November in Florida. The physician who revolutionized screening methods for glaucoma nearly 20 years ago has patented a new device aimed at detecting glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness. Steven Feldon, director of the Medical Center's Eye Institute, has received a U.S. patent for a new tonometer, a device that doctors and optometrists use to measure pressure inside the eye. The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the Medical Center has been awarded a $1.5 million, five-year grant from the New York State Department of Health to run the Greater Rochester Area Tobacco Cessation Center. The grant will be coordinated through the Smoking Research Program at the Wilmot Cancer Center. Funding began August 1 and will continue through July 2009. Steven Loucks '90S (MBA), deputy director of the University's Laboratory for Laser Energetics and a retired naval captain, received the Defense Programs Award of Excellence from the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration on August 18 in Washington, D.C. He was awarded the honor for "outstanding project management and operational performance of the Omega laser facility." Steven Schwid, associate professor of neurology, will receive the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Upstate New York Chapter on December 11 in Rochester. The award recognizes Schwid's years of service, volunteerism, research, and care for people with MS.
