Drop by and donateStudents, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in a University blood drive for the American Red Cross from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, October 11, and Tuesday, October 12, in the May Room of Wilson Commons. The event is organized by the D'Lions, a student service organization that sponsors programs in residence halls and on campus, and by the Office of the Dean of Students in the College. Get the scoop on cogenerationThe University will hold another public meeting to discuss, and invite comment on, its plans for cogeneration at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, at St. Anne Church Social Hall, 1600 Mt. Hope Ave. The University is planning improvements to the campus utility plant (located just north of Elmwood Avenue near Kendrick Road) so that the plant can produce electricity along with the steam now generated to heat and cool buildings on the River Campus and at the Medical Center. Cogeneration of electricity and steam will be accomplished using no more fuel than if only steam was produced. The meeting will feature information about the project status, the permit approval process, and the project schedule; members of the public are invited to ask questions. Expecting twins?Couples expecting the birth of twins or triplets can take part in a new childbirth class designed especially for them starting this fall at Strong Memorial Hospital's Strong Beginnings. Three one-day sessions of "Marvelous Multiples" are scheduled for Saturdays in October, January, and March. Participants can register for any one of three sessions by calling x5-4058.
Catch A Mouthful of BirdsThe International Theatre Program will present the contemporary drama A Mouthful of Birds beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, October 14, in Todd Theater. The play, by Caryl Churchill and David Lan, is based on the Dionysian myth in Euripides's The Bacchae and concentrates on themes of possession, violence, and transformation. The play runs at 8 p.m. October 14 to 16 and October 20 to 23, with a matinee performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 17. Symposium addresses obesityPhysicians can learn about the latest interventions and practical strategies to help treat and manage obese and overweight patients at the Third Annual Northeast Regional Obesity Symposium. Hosted by the University Nutrition Weight Management Center, "The Obesity Epidemic: Current Findings and Clinical Approaches" will be held October 7 and 8 at the Holiday Inn Rochester Airport. University faculty and many nationally prominent speakers will highlight successful methods for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of obesity in adults and children, including useful nutrition, behavior and physical activity strategies, and successful family interventions. New hours for ID OfficeDue to fall break, the River Campus Customer Service Center/ID Card Office will be closed Saturday, October 16, and will be open Monday, October 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On October 19, the office will resume regular hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Research participants neededSmoking Cessation--Participants are needed for the Smokers' Health Project. Study participants must be at least 18 years of age, smoke at least five cigarettes a day, and show interest in quitting smoking. Phase two of the project will begin soon.
