Literary force Marcus to read

uthor Ben Marcus, who has earned a Whiting Writer's Award, a National Endowment for the Arts award for fiction, and three Pushcart prizes, will read from his work at 8 p.m. Monday, October 25, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library as part of the Plutzik Memorial Series.

Marcus's writing has been acclaimed for its unique voice. His debut novel in 1995, The Age of Wire and String, was called "a rare, genius-struck achievement" by Kirkus Reviews. His other books of fiction are North American Women and The Father Costume. His anthology, The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories, was published in August of this year.

Marcus's fiction, essays, and reviews have appeared in Time, Harper's, The Paris Review, Salon, The Village Voice, and other literary journals and magazines. He also has been editor for various literary magazines including Impossible Object, an online literary journal, and Fence magazine. Marcus is currently an assistant professor of writing in the School of Arts at Columbia University.

The Plutzik Series is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious literary reading programs. Established to honor the work of Hyam Plutzik, a distinguished poet and Deane Professor of Poetry and Rhetoric at the University, it has featured more than 175 noted writers and is administered by the Department of English.
