In Brief

Give a Gift

The Interfaith Chapel communities and the Religious Round Table are reaching out to all members of the University community to participate in the annual Gifts-for-the-Giving holiday project. Donations of gifts and monetary support will provide holiday presents and food for some of the families of children at Rochester's School 17, St. Boniface Catholic School, Sojourner House, and others in need.

Individuals and campus groups can sign up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. November 17 through 19, in Wilson Commons near the Student Activities office. During Thanksgiving break, volunteers will fill bags with unwrapped gifts and return them to Wilson Commons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. between December 1 and 3, or take them to the Interfaith Chapel any time before December 3. The Interfaith Chapel communities include Hillel, Muslim Student Association, Newman Catholic Community, Protestant Community, and University Christian Fellowship.

This year's goal is to prepare more than 500 gift bags. For more information about the program and a list of gift suggestions, contact Gloria Colls at x5-8422 or Eileen Bruton at x5-4321.

Recycle those phone books

The distribution and collection of Frontier White/Yellow Pages and the University Faculty/Staff/Student Telephone Directories is under way. All departments are asked to recycle last year's directories by dropping them off at either the Goler House Parking Lot or Gavett/Harkness recycling location. Direct questions to the recycling coordinator at x3-5786.

Information on copyright compliance

In preparing course materials for the upcoming semester, instructors should be mindful to comply with federal copyright law. When using works subject to copyright protection, including course materials placed on electronic reserve, instructors should have permission of the copyright owner or use an analysis worksheet to document "fair use" or other exceptions. The worksheet is available online at www.lib.rochester.edu/copyright/wksheet.htm.

Contact Associate Provost Lynne Davidson at lynne.davidson@rochester.edu or x3-4765 for questions regarding the University's policy or for assistance in obtaining copyright permissions. Or visit www.lib.rochester.edu/copyright for additional information.

Jazz it up

The River Campus Jazz Ensemble will be giving a concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, November 18, in Strong Auditorium. Under the guidance of director Eric Schmitz, a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music, the ensemble will perform such jazz classics as Stompy Jones by Duke Ellington, Time for a Change by Hank Levy, and Li'l Darlin by Neil Hefti, in addition to many others. The concert is free and open to the public, but donations are welcome. For more information, contact the College music department at x5-2828.

Decorate safely

There are numerous fire hazards that can be created by holiday decorations. Policies concerning holiday decorations vary dependent upon the type of building construction, occupancy and fire detection, and suppression equipment utilized. The following are a number of holiday decoration guidelines for River Campus facilities:

  • Use of artificial greenery labeled as fire resistant or flame retardant and UL listed or classified is permitted. The use of natural greenery is prohibited except as approved by the Fire Marshal.

  • Holiday greenery and related electrical decorations are not permitted in corridors, aisles, stairways, or passageways and are not allowed to obstruct the usual view of exit signs.

  • Combustible materials are prohibited for use in holiday decorations. Foil decorations such as satin balls or holiday ribbon are recommended.

  • All electric light sets and extension cords used must bear the (UL) or (FM) label and be identified for indoor use. All lights should be carefully checked to ensure there are no loose sockets and that wires are not frayed or damaged and should be turned off before leaving the area.

  • Holiday lights should not come into contact with paper, cloth, or other combustible items and should be attached to walls or molding with electrical tape or cup-type hooks.

  • No more than three sets of holiday lights per extension cord is allowed. Overloading electrical outlets can be dangerous.

  • The use of candles, lanterns, oil lamps, or any type of other open flames in prohibited.

  • Posting of flyers and other combustible material is permitted only on general-purpose bulletin boards and authorized posting areas.

For additional information, contact the Fire Marshal's Office at x5-3243.
