Celebrate fourth annual Meliora Weekend
he College will celebrate its fourth annual Meliora Weekend October 8 to 10. Combining four Rochester traditions--Homecoming, Family Weekend, Reunion, and the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta--the event will host some of the biggest names in politics, science, the arts, and business.
Students can enjoy a wide array of symposia, career workshops, performances, sporting events, parties, food, and more. Parents are especially encouraged to attend the Parents' Breakfast, the Rochester Revue, and department open houses. Meliora Weekend festivities begin on Thursday night, with the Yellowjacket Student Dinner. On Friday afternoon, JetBlue Airways founder and CEO David Neeleman will talk about his business philosophy and the innovative thinking behind his successful airline. Influential television news agent Richard Leibner '59, founder of the news and reality-television agency N. B. Bienstock, will receive the 2004 Meliora Citation for Career Achievement and discuss his 40-year-old company, electronic journalism, and the broadcast industry. On Friday night, comedian Dennis Miller performs, followed by one of western New York's top rock bands, Uncle Plum. Among the many events planned for Saturday are symposia featuring political commentators James Carville and Mary Matalin, Xerox chair and CEO Anne Mulcahy, CNBC's Kudlow and Cramer cohost Larry Kudlow '69, educator and author William Guiffré '56, '63 (Mas), '78 (PhD), former United States Poet Laureate Rita Dove, medical anthropologist Paul Farmer, and rare-book curator Pablo Alvarez. Spanish flamenco troupe La Yedra, directed by Rebecca Thomas '99, also will perform. The Yellowjackets football team will take on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Saturday's Homecoming game, preceded by a picnic-style lunch at MelioraFest on the Fraternity Quad. On Saturday night, everyone can enjoy the University's wealth of talent at the Rochester Revue. Parents are invited to a breakfast with the deans on Sunday, and the weekend wraps up with the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta at nearby Genesee Valley Park, an event that draws dozens of crew teams from across the United States and Canada.
