Making news. . . .Jesse Bailey '05 was one of 77 college students nationwide who received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Bailey is a triple major in African and African-American studies, political science, and history. For the third year in a row, three Rochester students have been named Goldwater Scholars: Joseph Galante '05, who is majoring in mathematics; Christopher Supranowitz '05, who is majoring in optics; and Zhuohan Liang '04 (Take Five), who majored in physics and mathematics and, as a Take Five Scholar, will be researching the intersection of human intelligence and behavior with the natural world. Emily Hickey '05 was one of only 18 students to receive a Beinecke Memorial Scholarship, awarded for graduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Sara Korol '04, who majored in economics and also completed the certificate program in Polish and Central European Studies, and Sonja Stracke '04, who majored in brain and cognitive sciences and German, have been awarded Fulbright grants. Korol will spend her Fulbright year in Poland, and Stracke will spend a year as a teaching assistant in a German school. In addition, two Eastman students, oboist Bethany Slater '04 and violinist Will Knuth '03 (Take Five), also were awarded Fulbrights. Slater, who received the Lusk Memorial Fellowship, will study at the Paris Conservatory. Knuth will travel to Vienna to explore compositions written during the second half of the 20th century in Vienna. Part-time student Jonathan Prince '04 of Rochester was offered a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Prince, the first University student to receive the award, majored in brain and cognitive sciences and completed a minor in music. Take Five Scholar Audrey Stewart is the first Rochester student to receive a Morris K. Udall Scholarship for 2004-05. Stewart was one of 80 students selected nationally for the award this year. An active member and past president of the campus environmental group Grassroots, Stewart majored in environmental science and history. Joel Webb '06 received the first annual Library Art Purchase Prize for his sculpture, Texan Cactus. The work was selected from among those exhibited in the Annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition at the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons. The sculpture will be displayed in the reference area of Rush Rhees Library. The student newspaper Campus Times won three awards from the New York Press Association in the 2003 Better Newspaper Contest. The newspaper received third-place awards for general excellence and design. Another third-place award was shared by Karen Taylor '04 and Chadwick Schnee '05 for news coverage. Taylor was a staff writer and Schnee was editor-in-chief during 2003. Several University athletes were named national All Americans in their sport: Jake Budny '04 in men's outdoor track and field, Karen Gromer '07 in women's swimming, Seth Hauben '05 in men's basketball, Nate Micklos '06 in soccer, Kate O'Brien '05 in women's outdoor track and field, and Erika Smith '04 in women's basketball. In addition, several University athletes were named Academic All Americans by the College Sports Information Directors of America: Elizabeth Canfield '04 in women's cross country and outdoor track and field, Justin Galloway '05 in football, Avinash Reddy '05 in tennis, and graduate student Brian Strandberg in men's outdoor track and field. Soprano Heather Davis '04, pianist Jeremy Samolesky, a doctoral student, and hornist Julie Fagan '04 represented the Eastman School in the Conservatory Project, the first festival showcasing music schools through the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Four Eastman keyboard students won top honors at recent organ and piano competitions. Nicole Marane, a doctoral student, won the 14th annual John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Fund Competition and the first annual Miami International Organ Competition. Stephen Fraser '04 (MM) took first prize in the Fort Wayne National Organ Competition. Eric Dombrowski '05 won first prize at the Wells Competition for Young Organists. Hong Xu '06 placed second in the Hilton Head International Piano Competition and the National Music Teachers National Association Steinway Young Artists Competition. Four Eastman School vocalists took prizes in the third annual voice competition sponsored by the Friends of Eastman Opera. Mari-Yan Pringle, a master's student, placed first; second prize went to doctoral student Ted Christopher; and third prize was awarded to master's student Erin Snell. Sonia Rodriguez Bermejo, a master's student, received honorable mention.
