THE JOURNEY ENDS—A new, high-efficiency boiler arrived at the Central Utilities Plant on June 29 after leaving West Point, Miss., more than a month ago. Part of the University's cogeneration upgrade, the large boiler took a long travel route, making its way by rail through Illinois and Michigan, up to Toronto and Montreal, and down to Syracuse, eventually arriving in Henrietta. The boiler was given a police escort for the final leg of its journey, which it made by road on a transporter that measured about half the length of a football field. While delivery included a few unexpected delays, Dave Weed, director of Central Utilities, says he and his team are working to ensure this part of the Cogen project stays on schedule. "Now that the boiler has delivered, we plan to quickly begin the next phase that includes using a rather substantial crane, currently in transit from New Jersey, to lift the boiler off the transporter and position it into the plant, allowing us to continue making progress on the upgrades," says Weed.
